These carrots and this garden scene may look like any other, and it is like every school garden.  We have a small square of earth, vegetables and perennial fruits growing, and most importantly kids coming to the garden for goodness.

And maybe there is something more that makes our little square stand out.

Two springs ago, a group of Juniors, Seniors, and a few Sophomores reclaimed their abandoned school garden space.  When we first started working this little square of the schoolyard, it was full of weeds with a few beautiful tulips poking through in the early spring to remind us that something was still there.

We have secured funding with a new partner Steps to Success, a Montbello nonprofit working to prevent youth violence with youth 14-24 years old.  Our UrbanSEED program will use these funds to cover our first Youth Garden Leader Position to lead the garden and expand our community engagement.

My word, I can’t even tell you how much plastic I am finding in my life. 

I am conscious person, I do a lot that reduces waste….

But I am also a survivalist-In the fast-paced way.

Running from one thing to the next.

A swing through Starbucks,

A quick stop in the morning at the grocery for filling lunch boxes.

It’s a life of unpreparedness.

And it doesn’t work when you are trying to go no waste. 

The first step of this, I am finding, is a sit back and look at your life pause.

I am auditing my waste and preparing for a shift.

My kids keep hearing me say, soon we are going to have a life with no plastic, we will have to be finding alternatives to all of the stuff we h...

I can't even imagine it right now!  There are people living and producing so little each year that it fits in a small jar.  

This is my Day 1...and I was so overwhelmed by how much instant trash passed through my hands it didn't all get collected.

Learning Lesson #1

Imma hafta to be much more organized and plan to bring what I need!  ...This may turn into a character shift!
